Learn What A Day With TMJ Disorder Is Like
Everyone that suffers from TMJ disorder or other jaw issues has different experiences. But for demonstrative purposes, we’re going to describe a worse case scenario.
The tension in your jaw is so bad during the night that you toss and turn, never being able to get comfortable or relax. When your alarm does go off, it feels as though you just got in bed to rest after a long day. You “wake up” with a headache.
Even though your stomach is growling, you settle for a cup of yogurt and coffee for breakfast because chewing sounds far too unpleasant at the moment.
Your demanding job doesn’t exactly do wonders for the tension you’re already feeling, but you (without thinking about it) literally and figuratively grit your teeth and power through to lunchtime.
Your coworkers want to go out to that great burger joint down the road and you decide to join them. Because your jaw is acting up again, you’re unable to open your mouth wide enough to eat your sandwich. You make an excuse that you weren’t that hungry anyway and gulp down the soup that came with your meal. At least you’ll have something in your stomach so you can take some pain relievers.
The afternoon isn’t any better. You struggle to pay attention because of your lack of sleep and when you are fully engaged, it’s because you’re thinking about the ringing in your ears and discomfort radiating through your face.
Needless to say, you aren’t exactly the life of the party when you’re back home with family. You force yourself to eat some to set a good example for the kids but it takes a lot of effort and you wonder if your grimace is noticeable. You go to bed exhausted, hoping for a better tomorrow.
Let Us Relieve Your Jaw Pain
If you visit us and think that you have a TMJ disorder, we will provide a thorough examination to determine the cause of the issue and how best to address it. We’ll ask you a variety of questions regarding any issues you’re having with your jaw and perform a digital X-ray to assess your situation.
If you require a TMJ treatment, we will take precise impressions of the inside of your mouth right here in our office to make a custom mouthguard that will shift your jaw slightly to prevent tension and teeth grinding. You’ll wear the mouthguard while you are sleeping and possibly during the day depending on the severity of your disorder. This will allow your jaw to rest and heal.
If your case is less severe, we may be able to recommend various tips for relieving jaw pain, like facial massages and changes to your diet.
