1. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss
People might think that tooth decay claims more teeth than any problem, but it’s actually gum disease — also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease is a serious issue that can destroy the gums, bone, and even cause teeth to fail. Most adults will struggle with gum disease in their life. It’s estimated that about 50 percent of adults older than 30 will struggle with gum disease, and that risk goes up to about 70 percent for adults 65 and older.
2. Gum disease isn’t always curable
The first signs of gum disease are often bleeding or swollen gums, but it’s possible to have no physical signs and still have gum disease. The best way to make sure you’re free of gum disease is to visit the dentist. The early stages of gum disease can be reversed, but advanced gum disease, also called periodontitis, is not curable.
3. About 35 percent of the tooth is beneath the gum line
The root of the tooth is beneath the gum line and sits in the bone. You can clean the surface of the tooth with a good brushing routine, but brushing alone cannot clean every portion of the tooth. For that you’ll need floss. Using floss allows you to clean the entire portion of the tooth. If you’re not flossing, you could say that you’re not cleaning about 35 percent of your tooth.
4. It’s recommended to bring children to the dentist by the time they are 1.
If you have children, you should bring them to the dentist by the time they are 1. This allows us to monitor the development of the teeth and check for any abnormalities in the mouth. Additionally, the earlier your child gets acclimated with the dentist, the most likely they are to maintain a good perception of the dentist for the rest of their lives. During your child’s first dental office, we’ll introduce your child to dental tools and even let them pick a prize out of our treasure chest.
5. About one and four adults have untreated tooth decay
Adults aren’t great about keeping up their dental appointments. Many people skip dental appointments because of the busy schedule, and so about 27 percent of adults have untreated cavities. The best way to ensure that you’re cavity-free is to never miss your regular cleanings and exams.
