Use A Comfortable And Effective Custom Athletic Mouthguard
As you surely know, maintaining an active lifestyle is very important for your overall health. But you don’t want to run the risk of hurting yourself when you are participating in certain physical activities, so you should do your best to protect yourself with the proper safety equipment.
Just like you use a helmet for your head, you should keep the inside of your mouth safe with a mouthguard. And just like you wouldn’t waste money on a helmet that wasn’t comfortable or didn’t fit you properly, you shouldn’t get just any mouthguard.
Like most things, you get what you pay for when you get a protective mouthguard. Boil-and-bite mouthguards that you can purchase at most sporting goods stores are better than nothing, but they are cheap for good reason. You can easily chew a hole in them and encounter other issues. Likewise, one-size-fits-all mouthguards are never exactly what their name says they are.
Compared to other options, custom sports mouthguards are more comfortable and perform much better when it comes to keeping your smile safe. They are slightly more expensive, admittedly, but that’s a small financial difference compared to the peace of mind you’ll get knowing that your teeth are as safe as possible.
You probably don’t need a mouthguard for jogging or other activities that pose a low risk of dental injury, but there are a lot of sports that you should definitely get one for, including:
- Mountain biking
To help you ensure that your custom mouthguard lasts for as long as possible, we can go over proper care techniques with you.
You should always make sure your mouthguard is properly cleaned, for example. Before you put it in and after you are done using it, rinse it thoroughly with warm (but NOT hot) water. Always make sure your mouthguard is dry before you put it away, as well. To protect your mouthguard and keep it clean, place it in the vented plastic case that we’ll provide for you.
You should also bring your mouthguard to your bi-annual dental exams at our Racine, WI dentist office so we can make sure it is still in good shape. If necessary, we can replace your mouthguard when it becomes worn out.
