4 Ways to Improve Brushing

1. Try brushing longer

Whenever you visit the dentist, we’ll remind you to brush your teeth twice a day. A recent study published by the American Dental Association found that only about 7 and 10 people brush twice a day. We’d like to see everyone brushing twice a day, and we’d always like to see patients brushing longer. We’ve found that patients scrub their teeth extremely hard stead of softly brushing the teeth for a full two minutes.

To help with this, set up a timer on your phone or use a free dental app. There are a few free dental apps you can use to guide you through your brushing. With a little work and tracking, you’ll find yourself in a healthy routine.

2. Stop using old toothbrushes

Are you keeping your toothbrush or toothbrush head for too long? Because your toothbrush is being used to remove bacteria and plaque, it’s natural for that toothbrush to collect bacteria over time. The American Dental Association recommends that you swap out your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months. This allows you clean your mouth with a clean toothbrush and one with firm bristles that can effectively clean your teeth.

3. Use fluoride-based toothpastes   

The right toothpaste is an extremely important part of your oral health routine. There are several types of toothpastes on the market. Some are marketed for people with sensitive, while others focus almost entirely on teeth whitening. But when it comes to cleaning teeth, reducing cavities, and even restoring enamel — select a toothpaste with fluoride. Studies have found that fluoride, a natural substance, reduces the risk of cavities. Fluoride is even found in most public drinking sources.  

4. Store toothbrush in open space

It’s better to store your toothbrush in an open space rather than in a drawer. The reason is simple. When your toothbrush is stored in an enclosed space, it increases the risk of bacteria forming on the toothbrush. Try storing the toothbrush in a cup on the sink away from the toilet.
